Our Story
4th Generation Shopkeepers
Just over 100 years ago, my Great Grandmother Edith along with her sisters were each gifted a shop by their Father.
The shops were dotted around Nottingham and included one opposite Sneinton market and one on Derby road (amongst other locations I can't recall).
The shops traded tripe and heel, a staple food back then (hard to imagine people ate this, but they did).
My grandmother Joyce, who was Edith's second youngest daughter continued this tradition and owned and ran a traditional corner shop and greengrocers, and my mum was born above it.
As a child I loved to hear the stories told to me by mum of when she grew up and worked in the shops owned by her family, so it was no surprise that I ended up finding my own path take me on a journey with food, and after a 20 year career starting in M&S as a bag packer and ending as a store manager for Sainsburys, it seemed only natural to create Buttercross foods (even if it was in the middle of a global pandemic).
We believe that great quality food shouldn’t have to cost the earth, which is why we source as much as possible from local suppliers, growers and makers.
The shop is packed to the rafters with locally grown produce, locally baked breads, handmade chocolates, and artisan food products.
We are based in the centre of Bingham in what was once an old post office yard, its a quaint setting surrounded by other amazing independent businesses.
We truly are a family business, with food being in our blood and at the heart of everything we do, and Edith's great great granddaughters ( one of which is named after her and are 5th generation shop keepers in training) love nothing more than putting an apron on and helping to stack the shelves and clean the shop ready for the next day.
